Volume XX | Month Day 20XX
July 2022 Health Newsletter

Greetings to our patients and readers of Chapala Med’s Health Newsletter. I hope you all had a happy and festive CANADA DAY and 4th of July celebrations, respectively. Thank you for taking the time to read this month’s Chapala Med newsletter.

Although it may be “LOW” season in June and July, we’ve been pretty busy these past two months. Since opening my practice in Chapala in 2012, one thing has remained consistent especially during this time of year, a rise in the incidence of GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTiONS. Gastroenteritis cases caused by Salmonella and various parasites are rampant. Please take your precautions and wash your fruits and vegetables and eat at clean venues. The second reason our clinic has been extremely busy has been due to this FIFTH WAVE of COVID-19 we are currently riding. The good news is that this has not been responsible for as many hospitalizations and deaths as previous strains but the bad news is that it is extremely contagious. In early July 2022, a strain called BA.5—the most contagious one so far along with BA.4, another subvariant—is causing more than 50% of cases, making it the predominant strain in the United States. (BA.4 accounts for about 20% of all U.S. COVID cases.) Chapala Med will be requiring that ALL of our patients wear protective face masks while in our clinic. These measures are for the safety of our staff and all of our patients as well. So please, help us reduce the spread of this virus.

I am not pleased to announce that there is another two viruses that we need to keep on our radar. The WHO (World Health Organization) has declared the ongoing Monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Up to this date there are close to 3,000 cases in the U.S. and 60 that have been identified here in Mexico including Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara. Read the article below for more information. It saddens me as a physician and a member of Rotary International that there has been a case of POLIO identified in New York state. Rotary International has been fighting hard to end Polio on a worldwide basis and its logistical infrastructure has been used to combat the COVID19 pandemic. I have a few patients who were afflicted by the Polio virus and many who remembered being POLIO SHUT-INS during outbreaks during their childhoods. I head you to stay vigilant and keep yourself and those you care about safe from all of these bugs which threaten our lives, livelihood and our way of life.

Until the end of June 2023, I will be dedicating most of my Tuesdays for personal time and for preparation for our Rotary Club of Ajijic meetings which meet Tuesday evenings. So our teams geriatrician Dr. Marcos Gonzalez Barba will be seeing my patients in my stead. I will be in the office for administrative issues but Dr. Gonzalez will be seeing most of our cases. He is extremely bright and had the second highest GERIATRICS BOARD score in the entire country this past February. I am sure that the community will grow to appreciate him for his professionalism, knowledge and caring bedside manner.

Our practice of Regenerative medicine has been growing substantially. The use of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and STEM CELLs for a wide variety of diagnoses such as joint arthritis and injury, hair loss and even male erectile dysfunction. We have been successfully treating these patients with these procedures. Click on the link to our video for more information.

A quick reminder to our patients. If you feel you need to be hospitalized please contact Dr. Hernandez via phone call, Whatsapp or an email prior to admission. I have continued to receive reports from my patients who have sought my care at the local hospitals and were told that I or my team of doctors did not answer calls or refused to come to their aid. We have documented proof that the patients were misinformed or misled and at times, it lead to unintended and painful consequences. Please use our emergency numbers as your emergency medical contact numbers.

As always,  I’d like to remind our readers of our Chapala Med’s MISSION STATEMENT so that you are all aware of what we are striving to accomplish everyday and hold us to this mission. Thank you for continued support.

Monkeypox an International Emergency
The number of Monkeypox cases continue to increase and have been higher in patients who are men who have sex with men. There have been cases reported in Guadalajara and in Puerto Vallarta and we do believe that in the near future the likelihood of cases in the Chapala Lakeside is very realistic.

Four Drinks per day Adversely Affects the Brain
The Expat community in Lake Chapala tend to be more social than their counterparts in the U.S. or Canada and thus tend to drink alcohol more frequently. These habits can adversely affect their brain health

TOP TEN USES OF PRP and STEM CELLS
Both PRP and stem cell therapy are treatments that help with the regeneration of damaged tissue in the body. PRP is different from stem cell therapy, however, and is best used for treatments dealing with acute pain and less severe injuries.
Dr. Hernandez has been doing these regenerative medical therapies since 2016 and has grown to become the preeminent regenerative medicine physician in the Lakeside area.
Click on the link bellow for the TOP 10 USES of these therapies.
Thank you for your trust, support and recommendations
